Alphabet Sounds

TERM 2 SOUNDS:

The students will be taught the initial and final blends (Green level) and be introduced to the level three digraphs (Purple Sounds) this term in their own classes. All three prep grades will be participating in streaming. This means the students will be grouped into 3 different groups. This is to ensure all students are being explicitly taught at their point of need. Your child will learn along side students from the whole prep cohort, not just their grade. If you have any questions about streaming please speak with your child’s teacher.

SOUNDS PROGRAM

The prep students are busy learning all their alphabet sounds. However do not do this isolation. We connect sounds to words straight away and will be blending sounds together to work out CVC (Constanant, Vowel, Constanant) words like cat, pin, pop, hug and leg. This knowledge will develop their reading and spelling when writing.

You will be so surprised how quickly they learn the alphabet sounds however if your child needs to be further challenged they will learn blends ( bl, cl, br, st, tw), then digraphs ( ee, oo, ow, ai, qu, or) and finally tri-graphs and split graphs (igh, tch, o_e, a_e).

Below is the sequence of sounds that the prep students will be introduced to. They need to recognise the sounds confidently within words to enhance their reading, spelling and writing skills. Learning letters and their sounds is a very important part of the prep year. If students are confident knowing these sounds it will give them the basis to thrive in the following years.
